AZ Right to Dissent
We are a coalition of organizations and individuals defending the right to boycott — a form of political expression protected by the First Amendment. Our mission is to reaffirm our constitutional rights before censorship of political dissent spreads further—in Arizona and across the country.
Dissent Is American
From the Boston Tea Party to the Montgomery Bus Boycott to grape boycotts – boycotts have always been how everyday people fight back against power. The Supreme Court confirmed that protection in 1982. It isn't a left or right issue — it's foundational to American democracy.
Yet Arizona has required its public entities to enter into contracts on our behalf, binding us to political beliefs we have not agreed to. A federal court blocked the law in 2018. Arizona's lawmakers simply moved the goal post without taking accountability for their unconstitutional overreach.
Why This Moment Matters
The attacks on free speech and dissent are accelerating — and they don't stop at one issue. The same machinery that criminalizes boycotts also chills protest and shields powerful industries from democratic accountability. People fighting immigration abuses, climate destruction, workplace inequity, and corporate power all share a stake in this fight. Defending the right to boycott is how we protect all of it.
