Boycotts are protected speech, but Arizona lawmakers made some boycotts illegal.

The right to dissent — including the right to boycott — is foundational to American democracy.

But since 2016, Arizona has required our state agencies, cities, towns, counties, universities, and colleges tie their contracts with private companies, on our behalf, to a particular political position. That's compelled speech — and it's exactly what the First Amendment forbids.
